Groin Protection#

Get yourself an athletic cup, also known as a jock cup or jill cup. Better yet get 2-3 depending on how often you want to attend class and how often you do laundry.

While the area that the cup protects is a forbidden target, accidents do happen. If you aim a thrust at your opponent’s centre and they offline your blade low, that could be a problem. If you’re making a leg cut and they try to void but don’t quite make it, that could be a problem.

Tournaments#

Jock cups are often mandatory for male presenting fencers in tournaments, and strongly recommended for everyone else. While NHF doesn’t check for cups, some tournament judges require that fencers give their cup a quick tap-tap to prove that it’s there during the ringside gear check.

You’re not going to get hit there a lot. But when you do, you’ll really want to be wearing a cup.

Recommendations#

While many online sellers carry cups for the sake of a complete catalog, this is not specialized fencing gear. You can just as easily pick up an athletic cup from your local SportChek and grab whatever they have in stock.
